Put away the phone and save a life
It is my considered opinion that mobile phones, tablets and even lap top computers are contributing to Aquatic Accidents resulting in death by drowning or near death by drowning. For the last decade I have been predicting the impact smart phones and technology will have on distracting parents from the strict visual supervision needed to prevent a drowning or near death by drowning. It seems like my plea to constantly watch your children when around any body of water, whilst viewed by a few, has been lost in the white noise of social media. If you google mobile phones and drowning you will see numerous web pages re-enforcing my message. The only 100% sure way of preventing a toddler drowning when at the beach, in your pool, visiting a dam or lake, indeed any body of water including deep puddles of water is to make sure they are constantly in view and you are as close as possible to them. Water is a silent killer if a child/adult does not know how to swim. Even the most powerful swimmers in the world are not drown proof. A classic example of this was Captain Mathew Webb the first man to swim across the English Channel. Captain Webb drowned at the age of 35 trying to swim across the Niagara River. When it comes to your toddle/child around any body of water please put your mobile phone away and concentrate on your child, it may save a life. Chris Shapland.
